Voters vs. Olympia

Turkish passport holders will vote in a single polling station at the Olympia centre.

Kensington Olympia will be the single polling station for Turkish passport holders wanting to vote in this summer’s presidential election.

As the logistics for the first Turkish elections to be held outside of the country become clearer, it has emerged that expatriates will have to book a “voting slot” before arriving to cast their ballot on the day.

Voters can choose to vote either between 8am-12.30pm or 12.30-5pm on Saturday 2 or Sunday 3 August. They must indicate their preference on the website of the Turkish Electoral Commission (YSK) in the penultimate week of July.

Voting will take place in Britain one week before the election in Turkey to allow time for the ballots to be flown back to Ankara for counting.

A little over 76,000 Turkish passport holders are eligible to vote across the Britain in the contest, which is expected to feature Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan against Ekmelledin İhsanoğlu, a candidate jointly nominated by opposition parties.

Mr Erdoğan has yet to declare his candidacy but his AK Party have said they will make an announcement on Tuesday 1 July.

All Turkish passport holders over the age of 18 are eligible to vote but must ensure they are enrolled on the “Overseas Electoral Register” (Yurtdışı Seçmen Kütüğü) first.

Voters can check the website of the Turkish Electoral Commission (YSK) website (by visiting www.ysk.gov.tr) to see whether they are registered.

Unregistered candidates can register by post through the Turkish Consulate in London until 2 July, or until 9 July if they visit the consulate in person. An address declaration form (“Adres Beyan Formu”) and a photocopy of either a Turkish passport or identity card is all that is required to register.

TURNOUT FEARS

The Kensington Olympia Centre, to the west of central London, is the venue where 55 ballot boxes will be set up over the voting weekend.

There are fears turnout could be affected by the decision to create a single huge polling station, particularly for Turkish citizens living in other parts of the country who are reluctant to travel to London.

Multiple polling stations have being arranged for Turkish voters in other countries including Belgium, Germany and Greece.

Analysts had used other information to predict a higher number of voter registrations than seen in this week’s figures.

According to the 2011 UK census, for example, 91,115 people registered their place of birth as Turkey. Separately, the Turkish Consulate has previously said upwards of 170,000 Turkish nationals had applied to them for consular assistance.
