Neighbourhoods home to large parts of Turkish-speaking communities is also home to the borough’s unhealthiest people
Enfield’in doğusunda yer alan ve Türklerin yoğun yaşadığı Edmonton bölgesinde yaşam süresi beklentisi batıda yer alan Highlands gibi bölgelere oranla 10 yıl daha az.
An area of Enfield inhabited largely by Turkish-speaking people suffers from the lowest life expectancy in the North London borough.
The three wards that make up Edmonton have an average life expectancy of 76.8 years, almost a full decade below the prosperous neighbourhoods of Highlands.
The findings come from the latest annual report by Healthwatch charity.
Among the organisation’s stark findings is that a man born in Edmonton Green is currently expected to have a lifespan eight years shorter than a man born in Grange ward.
The report continues: “Female life expectancy provides an even starker difference with a woman born in Upper Edmonton expected to have a lifespan over 13 years shorter than a woman born in Highlands ward.”
The 2011 census revealed Edmonton has largest number of Turkish speakers in the country. It is also home to the largest number of people born in Turkey.
Donald McGowan, Enfield’s cabinet member for health, said he believed there is a direct link between poverty and obesity.
He said: “While obesity levels are high we know that there is a strong relationship between poverty and obesity. The council’s efforts in tackling deprivation is therefore a key driver in addressing this problem.
“To encourage residents to become fitter we also have programs such as the Healthy School Schemes and in the near future Cycle Enfield should have greater numbers of us to cycling as a matter of routine.”
