Turkish Cypriot foreign minister slams negotiator Kudret Özersay for ignoring his own country’s government

A senior Turkish Cypriot politician has attacked his own country’s peace negotiator on the eve of a working visit to London.

Özdil Nami, who became foreign minister last year, accused chief negotiator Kudret Özersay of keeping his government out of the loop over his talks with the Greek Cypriot leadership.

“We are trying to give him every kind of support, but I am sorry to say that if one’s own Special Representative has still not stepped through the doors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this is a grave flaw,” Mr Nami told Turkish Cypriot television last week.

The chief negotiator position is not a government appointment but one made directly by the Turkish Cypriot president, Derviş Eroğlu.

Mr Eroğlu’s National Unity Party (UBP) is in opposition in the Turkish Cypriot assembly after losing parliamentary elections last summer.

Mr Nami, a member of the governing Republican Turkish Party (CTP), said his government needed to be kept more informed of developments with the peace talks: “I hope that these issues will be resolved in the coming period. He says he speaks to the Prime Minister, but the government’s centre for foreign policy is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“There should be daily consultations [with us].”

He continued: “The government is not an NGO that can be manipulated. There is a parliamentary system in the north, not a presidential one, and in such a critical time consultations with us should be very intensive.”

Mr Nami is due in London next week for a working visit between 5 and 8 September, including a reception with journalists and Cypriot community representatives at the Turkish Cypriot representative’s office.

Londra Gazete reported last week that Mr Özersay is rumoured to be considering a run for the Turkish Cypriot presidency in next year’s elections.
