A private collector's version of one of the most famous examples of modern art is expected to fetch more than £50 million when it goes the hammer in May.

Edvard Munch's "The Scream", one of the world's most recognisable paintings, was produced in several different versions, but only one existed in private hands - until now.

The 1895 version, owned by Petter Olsen, a Norwegian businessman whose father was a friend of the painter, is to be sold at Sotheby's of New York. Mr Olsen is understood to want to raise funds for a museum, art centre and hotel, which will be dedicated to Edvard Munch.

The head of Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art department in New York, Simon Shaw, says the price could exceed £75 million.

Munch created several versions of The Scream in various media. The Munch Museum holds one of two painted versions and one pastel. The National Gallery of Norway holds the other painted version. The version held by Mr Olsen is in pastel. Munch also created a lithograph of the image in 1895.

The paintings have had an active recent history, having been the target of two thefts. In February 1994, four men broke into the National Gallery in Norway and stole its version of The Scream, leaving a note reading "Thanks for the poor security".

The painting had been moved down to a second-story display as part of festivities surrounding the Lillehammer Winter Olympic Games, and the presence of international media covering the games made the theft a sensation. It was recovered undamaged three months later.

In August 2004, more than a decade after the first theft another version of The Scream was stolen, this time from the Munch Museum in Oslo. The painting was again recovered, but this time after a two-year operation.
