Turkish woman gains construction qualificationA YOUNG Turkish woman was among a group of six local
A YOUNG Turkish woman was among a group of six local construction industry trainees in Hackney who graduated with an industry recognised qualification. Hatice Sokuru was among a group of women who successfully undertook a year of learning to complete a ‘Women’s DIY’ course which provides them with practical training in painting and decorating, electrics, plumbing and carpentry. The women were also provided with support and information so they can be confident when entering the male-dominated world of construction. The course, which was run for Hackney locals, provided the graduates with a City and Guilds Level 1 and together with a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) card, they have the skills to work within the building industry. The training was provided as part of the Woodberry Works which is a partnership between Hackney Homes, Woodberry Down Regeneration Team and a number of other agencies. The centre is funded by Hackney and Olympics Funding, among others. Woodberry Down Programme Director Robin Smith said “Woodberry Works is an important part of the community regeneration of Woodberry Down. This will ensure residents play an active role in the redevelopment of their community.” Cllr Guy Nicholson, from Hackney Council added: "Hackney Council and its partners are committed to ensuring residents have the best possible skills to apply for jobs created by the 2012 Olympic Games and development schemes such as Woodberry Down. The Woodberry Works construction centre is one way through which local residents can gain the qualifications and experience they need to compete for such jobs."
