THE CHAIRMAN of one of London’s Turkish Cypriot associations has brought a personal application to the European Parliament to reverse the Council decision, which prevents Turkish Cypriot representation in Brussels.

Mehmet Bayramoglu from the London branch of UBP wants to claim two MEP posts out of the six given to the Republic of Cyprus, arguing that Turkish Cypriot rights are not being properly represented in the Parliament.

This week Mr Bayramoglu said  "After working on the case for the past month, my case officially started on 18th March. We are asking the EU to give two seats to Turkish Cypriots to represent their community at the EU parliament. It has been a week but as yet we haven't heard anything from the European Parliament. Greek Cypriots did not apply for themselves, they applied as Cyprus. We want two different election logs according to the law of EU. There is an example of this in Belgium. Belgium has four different ethnic election logs. We want TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat to come up with elections for two MEPs in Northern Cyprus in the 6th June European elections.” QC Barrister Alper Ali Riza, who together with Munir Tatar is working on the case, said " Turkish Cypriots are unrepresented and we have the right to say this. If the result was positive about the Annan Plan in 2004, two of the six seats were going to be for Turkish Cypriots. This was what is being considered by EU.”

Mr Ali Riza added "In my opinion, if the Turkish Cypriots are unrepresented then there is no democracy. I have to say that I had the opportunity to talk to High Court judges in the UK and specialists and they said Turkish Cypriot have that right."

Mehmet Bayramoglu also mentioned that former president of TRNC Rauf Denktash is supporting the case as a personal application,  not government-led, which is considered as advantageous.

But Mr Bayramoglu has concerns about the time that they have till June. Mr Ali Riza added that if the case is unsuccessful then “that means the EU has no interest in Turkish people so Turkey should think of the next step to join or not to join EU."
