MEMBERS from the International Dance and Music Centre (IDMC) in Hackney will be dancing at the Lord Mayor’s Show this Saturday (14 November), atop their sponsored float.

IDMC is a traditional Turkish dance and music group and was selected to be part of the Lord Mayor's Show. The group received £15,000 to create a float for the day and to host workshops after school, in the evenings and at week-ends  for the Show.

IDMC, founded in 2003 in Hackney, is one of four sponsored floats for the Lord Mayor’s 2009  Show.

The aim of the organisation is to promote cultural cohesion within the borough by offering cultural dance, music, theatre and folk dance festival training, which allows members of the community to explore employment opportunities that have been identified as important to them.

Children and young people are strengthened through increasing their skills and gain a greater sense of their cultural identity.

The group has been meeting every week in preparation for their participation in the Show taking dance lessons and learning choreography for the day.

Their performance will focus on two different folk dances; one performed by 12 dancers,  from Diyarbakir , the heart of the Kurdish region in Turkey, and the other from the west of Turkey which will be performed by 15 dancers.

Both acts will be accompanied by traditional Turkish folk music.

The Lord Mayor’s procession has been an annual event in London for almost 800 years. It was the first event ever to be broadcast live on television, with half a million people attending the Lord Mayor’s Show and millions more watching on the BBC.
