80% of jobs and business opportunities to go to BME’s

Turkish Businesses, whether large or small, were encouraged to tender for business opportunities that are already being created in the run up to the 2012 Olympics at a conference last Tuesday.

The event, organised by the London 2012 and attended by the London Development Agency and Olympic Delivery Authority, announced a new website where businesses will meet in order to create contacts and to agree on contracts for a range of work arising out of the Olympics.

The site, CompeteFor, will filter down 20,000 - 50,000 opportunities, created by the 7,000 direct contracts meted out to tier 1 contractors.

The opportunities are of all sizes and types, from cleaning contracts to provisions of raw materials for building work. The utilisation of an open platform to tender for Olympics contacts is a world first.

Companies with over 5 employees will need to be registered as an equal opportunities business in order to be able to apply. Other vetting of the site will include scrutiny of suppliers who are consistently rejected and an evaluation whether contracts are being handed out fairly.

The conference also highlighted other benefits of the games including £32 worth of spending on training for employees within the Olympic business umbrella and the creation of 50,000 construction jobs.

Mike Mulvey, London Business Network, introduced the new site and predicted that at least 80% of new jobs and business opportunities created by the Olympics would go Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups. He said this was because the community in the vicinity of the Olympic games are of high minority ethnic mix. He hoped also that the London Olympics would go far to tackling the unemployment of certain ethnic groups in the east London area.

Cultural Olympiad

London 2012 speaker Richard Sumray also spoke of the work being done to promote culture from now until the start of the 2012 Olympics in order to bring as many people as possible into the spirit of the Olympics.

The Cultural Olympiad will showcase British talent and innovation and will reflect the key themes of the London 2012 Games: Celebrating London and the whole of the UK welcoming the world; Inspiring and involving young people; Generating a positive legacy.
