European Liberal DemocratsEUROPEAN Liberal Democrat parties meeting
This was in sharp contrast to some of the negative comments about Turkish membership made recently by several European conservative politicians and the newly appointed President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy. The resolution – proposed by Jonathan Fryer, Chairman elect of London Liberal Democrats – welcomed progress that Turkey has made in meeting many of the so-called Copenhagen Criteria for EU accession. He did acknowledge that further action still needs to be taken in respect to freedom of expression and the media, in particular. Delegates at the ELDR Congress – which groups Liberal Democrat parties from all European countries, including those not currently members of the European Union – also praised the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan for its initiatives aimed at resolving Turkey´s Kurdish question. On the issue of Meanwhile Embargoed! Turkish Cypriot human rights group co-founder Ipek Ozerim and Chair Fevzi Hussein were given firm support from key TRNC dignitaries and civil society groups for the group’s campaign plans. During a four-day visit to Fevzi and Ipek met with TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat, former President Rauf Denktas, Foreign Minister Huseyin Ozgurgun, Turkish Ambassador Sakir Fakili, academic Erol Kaymak, BRT director Ozer Kanli, and representatives from the British High Commission, Besparmaklar Group, British Residents’ Society, and the Turkish Cypriot Human Rights Foundation.
