BRITISH Prime Minister David Cameron’s speech in Turkey this week has won support from Baroness Hussein-Ece who said he was right to push forward Turkey’s bid for EU membership. Mr Cameron was in Ankara on Tuesday and said that the UK would do everything it can to help Turkey "pave the road from Ankara to Brussels" The PM promised to "fight" for Turkey's membership of the European Union, adding he is "angry" at the slow pace of negotiations. He said “Turkey is vital for our economy, vital for our security and vital for our diplomacy", adding that a European Union without Turkey at its heart was "not stronger but weaker... not more secure but less... not richer but poorer". Commenting on the Prime Minister’s support for Turkey’s membership of the EU, Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Hussein-Ece said: “Finally a British Prime Minister recognises the importance of Turkey for Britain and gives it credit for its role in Europe and the world. “Turkey has been a friend of our country and the EU for decades but was always treated as the poor relation. “Turkey has a strategic importance that cannot be underestimated. It has been a bridge between different regions, its economy is one of the largest in the world and Turkish soldiers have been valiantly fighting alongside British troops in Afghanistan. “Turkey’s membership of the EU would enrich and strengthen the Union and it is excellent news that the Prime Minister will be fighting hard on this issue. I look forward to working with him to bring this day closer.”
