A SERIES of paintings depicting the faces of war-torn Gaza went on exhibition in Islington this week.

Gaza Under Siege opened at the Islington Assembly Hall o Monday and among those attending were local MP Jeremy Corbyn.

The exhibition was put together by Islington based charity Friends of Yibna, a support group for a refugee camp of that name in Rafah, and featured over 40 works by 10 Palestinian war artists.

The exhibition is a reaction against last year’s bombing of Gaza by Israel in which 1,400 people died, including 400 children. The majority of artists at the exhibition are women.

They recount life and death experiences, the experience of siege and devastation caused by the Israeli military offensive.

More paintings were due to have been smuggled out of Gaza by Free Palestine campaigner Alex Harrison but she was arrested by Israelis on the recent Gaza flotilla in which nine Turkish nationals were killed by security forces.
